Experience

  • Two years of experience working at least 20 hours a week as a licensee.
  • The experience verification affidavit is only provided as a part of the application by the testing service once the exam has been passed.

Education

A broker needs 336 hours of education, and the typical broker applicant's education is made up of the following courses:


  • Brokerage Management is 48 classroom hours and is a mandatory course for broker applicants.
  • 288 hours of approved Broker Pre-License courses.
  • You can use 9 college credit hours toward your Broker's license (144 course hours), these courses do not have to be in real estate.
  • Or you can use 21 credits from an accredited college with 12 credits in Real Estate.

Real Estate Brokerage: A Management Guide

After you finish the course, state law requires you take and pass an online proctored exam. The course will explain this process once all learning modules are complete. 

Kentucky Real Estate College (KREC) does permit refunds as long as the student complies with this Refund Policy. KREC shall issue a refund pursuant to a request for a refund by the student if (i) the student requests the refund within 14 calendar days of the enrollment date; AND (ii) Module 2 of the course has not been started. In the event that the student has started Module 2 of the course or requested a refund more than 14 calendar days after enrollment, KREC shall not be obligated to issue a refund.

  • What are the requirements to become a real estate broker in Kentucky?

    To become a licensed real estate broker in Kentucky, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and have at least two years of experience (averaging at least 20 hours per week) as a licensed real estate sales associate. You must also complete the required pre-licensing education and pass a state-administered exam.

  • How many hours of pre-licensing education do I need?

    Applicants for a Kentucky real estate broker license must complete 336 classroom hours of approved real estate education. This includes a mandatory 48 hours in Brokerage Management. The remaining hours can be fulfilled with other real estate courses and approved electives.

  • Can I use my college credits toward the education requirements?

    Yes, the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC) accepts academic credits from accredited colleges or universities. You can use 21 credit hours (12 in real estate courses, 3 in Brokerage Management, and 6 in approved electives) to fulfill the 336-classroom-hour requirement.

  • Are there reciprocity agreements for out-of-state brokers?

    Yes, Kentucky has limited reciprocity with certain states. If you are already a licensed broker in Illinois, Tennessee, Florida, West Virginia, or Ohio, you may be able to skip the national portion of the licensing exam. Specific requirements vary by state, so you should contact the KREC directly for details.

  • What is the Kentucky real estate broker exam like?

    The Kentucky real estate broker exam is administered by PSI and consists of a national and a state-specific portion. You must score at least 75% on both parts to pass. You have four months to retake any failed portion before the entire exam becomes void.

  • How do I apply for my broker license after passing the exam?

    After successfully passing both portions of the exam, you have 60 days to submit your license application, along with proof of your education, a background check, and Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance. The application is provided to you at the PSI testing center upon passing.
