ABOUT OUR KENTUCKY RECIPROCITY COURSE
Frequently asked questions
What is real estate license reciprocity in Kentucky?
Real estate license reciprocity is an agreement between states that allows licensed real estate agents and brokers from one state to obtain a license in another state without having to complete the full pre-licensing education requirements. Instead, they complete a shorter, state-specific course and pass only the state portion of the licensing exam.
Which states have real estate reciprocity with Kentucky?
The Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC) currently has reciprocity agreements or memorandums of understanding with the following states:
- Florida
- Illinois
- Ohio
- Tennessee
If you are an active, licensed agent in one of these states, you are eligible to pursue a Kentucky real estate license through this reciprocal process.
What are the requirements to get a Kentucky license through reciprocity?
To obtain a Kentucky real estate license via reciprocity, you must:
- Hold an active real estate license in an approved reciprocal state (Florida, Illinois, Ohio, or Tennessee) for a minimum period (typically 1-3 years, depending on your license type and state).
- Complete the 40-hour Kentucky Reciprocal License Law Course.
- Pass the final course exam with a score of 75% or better.
- Complete a national criminal background check.
- Request a Letter of Good Standing/License History from your current state's real estate commission.
- Pass the Kentucky-specific portion of the state licensing exam.
- Apply for your Kentucky license with the KREC.
How long does the 40-hour Kentucky Reciprocity Course take to complete?
Our 40-hour course is completely online and self-paced. This means you can work through the required education hours at your own speed, fitting your studies around your professional and personal schedule. While the course content is designed for a 40-hour minimum, you can take as long as you need within your enrollment period to complete the material.
Is your reciprocal course approved by the Kentucky Real Estate Commission?
Yes, our 40-hour reciprocal course is fully approved by the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC). It is designed to meet all the state's requirements for out-of-state licensees and covers essential Kentucky-specific laws and regulations you need to know to pass the state exam.
Do I have to take the national portion of the real estate exam?
No. As a reciprocal applicant, you are only required to take and pass the Kentucky-specific portion of the PSI licensing exam. This section of the exam focuses exclusively on Kentucky real estate laws and practices.
What is the process for out-of-state brokers?
The process for out-of-state brokers is very similar to that of sales associates. Brokers from reciprocal states must also complete the 40-hour Kentucky Reciprocal Course and pass the state-specific exam. There are additional experience requirements for brokers and a few extra steps related to establishing a Kentucky business address and escrow account.
What happens after I complete your 40-hour reciprocity course?
After you complete the course and pass the proctored final exam, we will provide you with a certificate of completion. You can then use this certificate to proceed with the remaining steps, including your background check, obtaining a Letter of Good Standing, and scheduling your Kentucky-specific licensing exam with PSI. We provide full guidance on these next steps to ensure a smooth transition.
How do I get a Letter of Good Standing or License History from my state?
You must contact the real estate commission or licensing body in the state where you are currently licensed. They will provide you with an official document that verifies your license is in good standing. This letter must be sent directly from the issuing commission to the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC).
What is the cost of getting a Kentucky license through reciprocity?
The total cost includes our 40-hour course tuition, the fee for your national criminal background check, the PSI exam fee for the state portion, and the final license application fee paid to the KREC. You will also need to secure an Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance policy.
